Muchalat Industries

Muchalat Industries is the corporate parent of the Green Island Energy company, which is developing a 90 megawatt thermal generating plant on the site of the former Gold River Pulp & Paper Mill. The new thermal plant will use biomass as fuel. In addition, Muchalat is responsible for all other commercial activities at the waterfront industrial park at the Gold River site.

The Gold River site is 409 acres, including 283 acres of industrial land zoned for heavy industry, power generation, mineral and concentrate storage, manufacturing and shipping, and other industrial activities. The foreshore area is a protected inlet that is shielded from high winds by a large mountain located on the northwest corner of the property. There are two barge loading ramps (with high vehicle weight capacity) and two steel pipe and concrete reinforced deep sea docks with a total of four berths, that were expanded and upgraded just prior to closing of the Mill in 1998. One deep sea dock measures 660' in length by 7' wide with high efficiency fenders capable of accepting 45,000 -60,000 dwt ships. The second deep sea dock measures 550' in length by 65' in width. Both deep sea docks have power and water hook-ups available and were upgraded in 1998 to meet the latest earthquake requirements of the US Applied Technology Council. The load weight of both docks is over 650 lbs per square inch. Minimum depth at low tide is 36'.

The private deep sea terminal exists entirely on lands owned by Muchalat. The site is non-union, and is fully compliant with Federal Government of Canada security standards for port facilities, including a BCIT certified Port Terminal Facility Officer. The property is completely fenced with electronic card key entrance and 24 hour security guard station.

The site also contains over 300,000 square feet of covered warehouse space, 40 acres of paved open storage, shipping offices, machine shop and tool rentals, carpenter shop and motor pool repair shop. The site contains tandem truck weigh scales and can be accessed year round via Highway 28.
